A Devotional for the Account That Heaven Is Waiting to Settle

The Diagnosis: A Nation of Unsettled Accounts

I live in Akasia, a stone's throw from the Union Buildings where power is brokered but a world away from the corridors where decisions are made. From my modest stoep, I have watched the purple jacaranda blooms fall and trampled into the dust of another Highveld summer. That season of spectacular beauty has given way to a more honest terrain the hard, sunbaked earth. And this, my friends, is the perfect metaphor for our current moment.

Consider the headlines that assault us daily. Thirteen bodies of women recovered in Ekurhuleni since July. Youth unemployment sitting at a suffocating 60.9% for those aged 15 to 24. A nation where the macro-economy shows signs of improvement while the micro-reality in a million households remains crushing. We are a people waiting  waiting for arrests, waiting for jobs, waiting for breakthrough, waiting for the power to come back on.

But I must ask a question that cuts deeper than any headline: What if heaven is also waiting?

Waiting on you. Waiting on me. Waiting on a church that has learned to pray with eloquence but has forgotten how to obey with urgency. The Scripture declares unequivocally in 1 Samuel 15:22  "To obey is better than sacrifice." And yet we have built an entire Christian culture around sacrifice. We sacrifice our Sunday mornings. We sacrifice our tithes. We sacrifice our worship. And then we go home and postpone the one instruction that would unlock the transaction.

Prayer opens the conversation. But obedience closes the transaction.

Many are still waiting on a miracle that is parked behind an unresolved instruction — a grudge unforgiven, a step not taken, a whisper ignored. Heaven does not withhold out of cruelty; it waits for the account of obedience to be settled. Child of God, examine the nagging thing you've grown comfortable postponing. Settle it today, not tomorrow. Your next breakthrough is not sitting behind another prayer it is sitting behind your next act of surrender.

The Investigation: Obedience as Currency

Let me define my terms clearly, for precision is the handmaiden of truth. When I speak of obedience, I do not mean a cold, mechanical compliance — the fearful shuffling of a servant who obeys only to avoid the whip. No. I speak of the obedience that flows from trust — the obedience of a son who knows the Father's heart, the obedience of a soldier who has counted the cost and still chosen to follow the Commander.

The argument can be formulated thus:

1. Premise One: God is sovereign, and His commands are not arbitrary but are expressions of His perfect wisdom and love.

2. Premise Two: Human disobedience, whether active rebellion or passive postponement, creates a blockage in the channel through which divine blessing flows.

3. Premise Three: Prayer without corresponding obedience is a cheque written on a closed account.

4. Conclusion: Therefore, obedience is the currency that settles the transaction between heaven's provision and earth's reception.

Is it not true that we all feel the weight of this? We pray for financial breakthrough while refusing to honour God with our firstfruits. We pray for reconciliation while nursing the grudge like a pet. We pray for direction while ignoring the last instruction we received. We are like a man standing at an ATM, pressing the buttons, typing the pin, and wondering why the machine says "insufficient funds" — when the truth is that there was never a deposit. The account of obedience was never settled.

Imagine, if you will, a world where every prayer was answered the moment it was prayed. What would that produce? Not a kingdom of love, but a universe of entitlement. God in His mercy does not give us that world. He waits not because He is cruel, but because He is building something in us that answered prayers alone could never build: trust, character, and the capacity to steward what He gives.

The Counterfeit: The Sacrifice of the Comfortable

We must sound the alarm against a particular error that has crept into the South African church like a slow fever: the substitution of religious activity for radical obedience. This is the sin of syncretism mixing the world's comfortable compromises with God's holy commands, diluting His sovereignty until our faith becomes a weak tea that cannot fortify the spirit.

Let me be confrontational here, as a prophet must be. You can attend church every Sunday for fifty years. You can sing in the choir. You can serve on the ushering team. You can fast and pray and give offerings. And still be fundamentally disobedient to the one thing God has asked of you. Sacrifice without obedience is noise. It is the clanging cymbal of a religion that has lost its power.

The Scripture declares through the prophet Samuel: "Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the LORD? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams" (1 Samuel 15:22). This is not a small verse tucked away in the historical books. This is a divine economy laid bare. God is not impressed by what you give up if you are withholding what He has asked for.

A common objection arises: "But surely God accepts my sacrifice if my heart is sincere?" However, this fails because sincerity is not the measure of obedience. You can sincerely walk in the wrong direction. You can sincerely build a life on a foundation of postponed obedience. Sincerity without obedience is sincerity that leads to ruin. The road to hell, as the proverb says, is paved with good intentions — and I might add, with heartfelt sacrifices offered in the place of the one thing God actually required.

The Evidence: From KasiNomics to the Kingdom

Let me bring this closer to home. In our own beloved South Africa, we have witnessed a phenomenon that illustrates this truth in the economic sphere. GG Alcock's KasiNomics Unleashed reveals that the informal sector the spaza shops, the commuter taxis, the hair salons, the chicken dust queens, the backroom rental barons is estimated to be worth between R1 trillion and R1.125 trillion annually. These kasipreneurs are not waiting for formal structures to recognise them. They are not sitting in boardrooms praying for a government tender. They are acting. They are obeying the whisper of opportunity, and in their obedience, they are sustaining communities and driving growth.

Now hear me clearly: God is not a vending machine, and obedience is not a magic formula. But there is a principle embedded in the fabric of creation: God blesses the person who acts on what they already know. The servants at the wedding in Cana did not understand why Jesus told them to fill the jars with water. But they obeyed and the water became wine. Naaman did not understand why he had to wash in the Jordan seven times. But he obeyed — and his leprosy was cleansed. The widow did not understand why Elijah asked her to use her last oil for him first. But she obeyed — and the jar never ran dry.

In every case, the miracle was parked behind an instruction. The instruction often made no sense. It often required risk. It often cost something. But the obedience came first, and the breakthrough followed.

The Confrontation: The Idols of Postponement and Self-Pity

I must now turn the mirror upon us all, myself included. What is the instruction you have grown comfortable postponing?

The grudge unforgiven. You have prayed the Lord's Prayer a thousand times "forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us" and yet you are still nursing the wound like a treasured scar. The Scripture declares: "If you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins" (Matthew 6:14-15). The transaction is clear. The account is waiting.

The step not taken. You have sensed the call — to start the business, to write the book, to mend the relationship, to leave the toxic environment — but you have postponed it under the guise of "praying about it." My friend, you are not praying. You are hiding. There comes a point when continued prayer about a thing you already know to do becomes disobedience dressed in religious language.

The whisper ignored. God has spoken — through His Word, through the counsel of godly people, through the promptings of the Holy Spirit — and you have silenced the voice with the noise of busyness and entertainment. The Scripture declares: "My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me" (John 10:27). Following is not a passive state. It is active. It is movement. It is obedience.

Is it not true that we all feel the weight of this? I know I do. I have postponed my own instructions. I have convinced myself that tomorrow would be more convenient, that the conditions would be more favourable. But delay is disobedience dressed in the fine robes of prudence. The Scripture through Angus Buchan rings true: "Delayed obedience is actually disobedience".

The Resolution: The Currency of Surrender

So what is the resolution? It is not more sacrifice. It is not more prayer in isolation. It is the bold, costly, immediate act of obedience.

Let me share a story from my own life. Just last week, I was wrestling with a conviction I had been avoiding for months a relationship I needed to mend, a word of apology I needed to speak. I had prayed about it. I had journaled about it. I had even preached about forgiveness. But I had not done it. And then I heard the Spirit whisper with piercing clarity: "Prayer opens the conversation. But obedience closes the transaction."

I made the call that day. It was uncomfortable. It was humbling. But in that act of obedience, something shifted. A blockage was cleared. A channel reopened.

Hear me now: Your next breakthrough is not sitting behind another prayer. It is sitting behind your next act of surrender. The miracle is parked behind the instruction. The transaction is waiting on the currency of obedience.

The Application: Settling the Account Today

Let me be practical, for insight without application is merely entertainment.

First, identify the instruction. Sit before the Lord not with a vague sense of guilt, but with a pen and paper. Ask Him plainly: "Lord, what is the one thing I have been postponing?" He will show you. He is not a God of confusion.

Second, count the cost. Obedience is rarely convenient. It often requires sacrifice. But the sacrifice of obedience is always less than the cost of disobedience. The path of Jonah was a storm, a fish, and a reluctant sermon. The path of obedience would have been a single journey and a single word. The price of postponement is always higher than the price of obedience.

Third, act today. Not tomorrow. Not next week. Not after you've prayed about it more. "Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says: 'Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts'" (Hebrews 3:7-8). The only moment you have authority over is this one.

Fourth, trust the God who waits. He is not waiting to punish you. He is waiting to bless you. He is not withholding out of cruelty. He is waiting for the account of obedience to be settled, so that the blessing He has already prepared can flow without hindrance.

The Closing Cal

The Scripture declares: "Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them" (John 14:21). Obedience is not the price of love. It is the proof of it. It is the currency that settles the transaction between heaven's abundance and earth's need.

Let us define our terms one final time. Obedience is not slavery. It is surrender. And surrender to the One who is love itself is not the loss of freedom it is the discovery of it.

Therefore, reason itself, illuminated by Scripture and confirmed in our deepest longings, compels us to acknowledge that the path of blessing runs through the gate of obedience. The prayer has been prayed. The conversation has been opened. Now the transaction awaits settlement.

Child of God, what have you been postponing?

The currency is already in your hand. The account is waiting.

Settle it today.

Prayer

Lord, show me the obedience I have postponed. Forgive me for the sacrifices I have offered in its place. Give me the courage to settle it today not tomorrow, not when the conditions are more favourable, but now. I choose obedience over sacrifice. I choose surrender over comfort. I choose You over my own postponement. In the name of Jesus Christ, my Lord and my Commander. Amen.
