Seeking God's Guidance Beyond Reason

 Seeking God's Guidance Beyond Reason

Scripture: Proverbs 3:5-6 - "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."

1. Reason alone is not always a reliable guide, as it can be influenced by personal biases and limited perspectives.

2. Personal experiences of God's presence and intervention can provide deeper insights and direction in life.

3. Sharing our stories of faith can be a more powerful witness to others than structured arguments.

4. Trusting in God's plan for our lives requires a surrender of control and a willingness to walk by faith.

5. May we seek God's wisdom and guidance beyond our own reasoning, trusting in His perfect plan for our lives.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help us to trust in your ways above our own understanding and to seek your guidance beyond reason. May our stories of faith reflect your work in our lives and draw others closer to you. Amen.

My story

My culture values reason above all else. We are taught from a young age to always have a logical explanation for our actions, and to never act on emotion or unexamined beliefs. To be labeled as irrational is a grave insult, one that can damage one's reputation and standing within the community.

I have always prided myself on my ability to reason and think critically. I have never been one to blindly follow tradition or superstition. I have always sought out logical explanations for the world around me, and have been skeptical of anything that cannot be explained through reason.

But despite my dedication to reason, I have come to realize that it is not always a certain guide for my direction. Reason can be twisted and manipulated to support any objective, and everyone believes they are right, no matter what they are doing. Even faith can be reasoned out and justified through structured arguments and philosophical debates.

I have seen this in my believing friends, who can eloquently defend their faith with logical arguments and evidence. But when I ask them how many came to a saving knowledge of their faith through reason alone, the answer is often few, if any. And when I reflect on my own journey to faith, I realize that it was not through rational argument or debate, but through a personal experience of encountering the divine.

I remember the moments when I felt the presence of God in my life, when I experienced His love and grace in a tangible way. I remember the peace and joy that came from surrendering my doubts and fears to Him, and trusting in His plan for my life. It was these moments of personal encounter that truly solidified my faith, not a well-reasoned argument or logical debate.

So while I will always value reason and critical thinking, I also recognize the power of personal testimony and lived experience. My story of encountering and being transformed by God is just as valid and powerful as any logical argument. And it is through sharing this story with others that I can truly give an answer for the hope that lies within me.

Go deeper

Seeking God's guidance transcends reasoning because Proverbs 3:5-6 tells us to trust in the Lord with all our hearts and lean not on our own understanding. In Isaiah 55:8-9, God's ways are higher than our ways and His thoughts are higher than our thoughts. This means that even when we cannot fully comprehend His plan, we are called to have faith in His wisdom and goodness.

Trusting in God's guidance also requires surrendering our own desires and plans to His will. In Matthew 16:24, Jesus tells his disciples that whoever wants to be his disciple must deny themselves, take up their cross, and follow him. This means putting aside our own preferences and submitting to God's perfect plan for our lives.

Ultimately, seeking God's guidance is an act of faith and trust in His sovereignty. Hebrews 11:6 reminds us that without faith, it is impossible to please God, and those who come to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him. Surrendering to God's plan requires trusting that He knows what is best for us and will lead us in the right path.

The Firm Foundation of Faith

## The Firm Foundation of Faith **Scripture:** Hebrews 11:1 "Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see." **Thought:** Life's journey is often marked by uncertainty and challenges. This faith allows us to persevere, knowing that God is working, even when we can't see the immediate results. It empowers us to step forward with courage, knowing we're not alone. Embracing this understanding allows us to live with a peace that surpasses all understanding, a peace rooted in the unshakeable truth of God's love and faithfulness. **Action Plan:** Spend 15 minutes today in quiet meditation on Hebrews 11. Reflect on a specific area in your life where you need to strengthen your faith. **Prayer:** Heavenly Father, I come before You today acknowledging my need for a stronger faith. Help me to truly grasp the meaning of Hebrews 11:1, to trust in Your promises even when I cannot see the outcome. In Jesus’ name, Amen. My story  Th...

**Restoring Relationships**

Last Tuesday, during Eskom’s Stage 6 load-shedding, I sat in my dimly lit Akasia living room, staring at a WhatsApp message from my cousin Thabo. Our once-close bond had fractured over a political debate—ANC vs. EFF—that spiraled into personal jabs. His text read: *“You’ve become a coconut, bra. Black on the outside, white-washed inside.”* My reply? A venomous *“At least I’m not a populist clown.”* Pride, that sly serpent, had coiled around our tongues.   But as the generator hummed and my coffee cooled, Colossians 3:13 flickered in my mind like a candle in the dark: *“Forgive as the Lord forgave you.”* Unconditional. No asterisks. No “but he started it.” Just grace.   **II. The Theology of Broken Pipes**   South Africa knows fractures. Our Vaal River, choked by sewage and neglect, mirrors relational toxicity—grievances left to fester. Yet, Christ’s forgiveness isn’t a passive drip; it’s a flash flood. To “bear with one another” (Colossians 3:13) is to choo...

The Power of the Mundane

## The Power of the Mundane **Scripture:** "And not a sparrow falls to the ground apart from your Father's will. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don't be afraid; you are more valuable than many sparrows." - Matthew 10:29-31 **Thought:** We often focus on the big moments, the grand gestures, believing those are the only things that truly matter to God. But Jesus reminds us that He cares deeply for even the smallest details of our lives. The way we approach our daily tasks, the words we speak, the thoughts we harbor – all of it is important. God sees it all, and He values each detail. This understanding empowers us to see purpose in the mundane, to find meaning in the seemingly insignificant. **Action Plan:** Today, choose one small task that you typically rush through or do without much thought. As you do it, consciously pause and offer it as a prayer to God. Thank Him for the opportunity to serve Him, even in this seemingly insignificant act.  **...
