The Greatest Commitment: Sacrificing To Follow Christ

The Greatest Commitment: Sacrificing To Follow Christ

Scripture: "Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends." - John 15:13

1. Christ's love for us far surpasses any worldly love. He laid down his life for us willingly and selflessly.

2. Following Christ requires a deep commitment and sacrifice, but the rewards are eternal life and joy in His presence.

3. The distractions of this world pale in comparison to the truth and power of the gospel. Let us not be swayed by temporary pleasures.

4. Our testimony of faith and commitment to Christ can impact those around us in powerful ways. Let your life be a reflection of His love.

5. May we be willing to give our all for the sake of Christ, knowing that His love and grace are far greater than any earthly reward.

Dear Heavenly Father, help us to understand the depth of Your love for us and the sacrifice Christ made on our behalf. Give us the strength and courage to commit our lives fully to following You, and may our testimony shine brightly for all to see. In Jesus' name, Amen.

My story

My personal story begins with a deep longing for something more in life. I felt lost and disconnected, searching for meaning and purpose in a world filled with noise and distraction.

I was constantly bombarded by messages from politicians and salesmen, all vying for my attention and loyalty. But their efforts felt hollow and insincere, lacking the depth and authenticity I craved.

Then, I encountered the gospel - a message of love, hope, and forgiveness that resonated with me on a soul-deep level. I was asked for my life, for a commitment far greater than any politician or salesman could ever demand. But in return, I was promised everlasting life, a peace and joy that surpassed all understanding.

The gospel required my all, but in giving myself fully to it, I found a love and acceptance beyond anything I had ever known. It filled the empty spaces in my heart and brought purpose and direction to my life.

I want others to understand the beauty and power of the gospel, to see how it surpasses all the distractions and superficialities of this world. I want them to experience the same transformation and renewal that I have found, and to share in the hope and joy that comes from a relationship with the divine.

So I ask for your commitment, for your life, knowing that in exchange, you will receive far more than you could ever imagine. The gospel is a message of love and redemption, of grace and mercy, and it has the power to change lives and heal hearts. I pray that you will open your heart to its truth, and that through your testimony of faith, others may come to know the incredible gift that is everlasting life.

Go deeper

The greatest commitment a believer can make is to sacrifice everything to follow Christ. This principle is rooted in Jesus' own words in Luke 9:23-24, where he says, "If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it." This call to self-denial and wholehearted devotion to Christ is echoed throughout the New Testament, with passages like Matthew 16:24-26 and Philippians 3:7-8 emphasizing the need to count all things as loss compared to the surpassing worth of knowing Christ.

Sacrificing all to follow Christ means surrendering our own desires, ambitions, and comforts in order to obey and glorify Him. It involves prioritizing the kingdom of God above. all else, even if it means facing hardships, persecution, or rejection from the world. This level of commitment requires complete trust in God's sovereignty and faithfulness, believing that He is worthy of our full allegiance and obedience. Ultimately, the greatest joy and fulfillment come from wholeheartedly following Christ, regardless of the cost.

The Rooster’s Restoration

The Rooster’s Restoration: When Failure Becomes Your Foundation By Harold Mawela Akasia, Pretoria Scripture: “The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: ‘Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.’ And he went outside and wept bitterly.” (Luke 22:61-62) I woke up this past Tuesday to the sound of a rooster crowing somewhere in the dusty streets of Akasia. My neighbour, old Mr. Dlamini, keeps a few chickens in his backyard—much to the annoyance of the municipality, but that is a story for another day. That crow pierced the morning silence like a prophet’s whisper. And immediately, my mind went to Simon Peter. Now, let me be honest with you. For years, I preached Peter’s denial as a cautionary tale—a warning against pride, a lesson in failure. I stood behind pulpits in Mamelodi, in Soshanguve, in the city centre, and I would point my finger and say, “Don’t be like Peter! He boasted when he should have pray...

The Law of the Open Hand

The Law of the Open Hand: From Scarcity to Divine Supply in a Clenched-Fist World By Harold Mawela From my study in Akasia, Pretoria, I look out at a nation holding its breath. We live in the perpetual tension between promise and provision, between what is pledged from podiums and what is present in our pantries. The headlines scream of crises competing for our fragmented attention, while our hearts whisper the ancient, agonizing question: “Will there be enough?” In this climate, a primal instinct takes hold: the clench. We clench our fists around our finances, our futures, our fragile sense of security. Yet, I come to you today with a counter-intuitive, kingdom truth, a law as immutable as gravity but activated by faith: The Law of the Open Hand. The Parable of the Tightened Fist: A Story from Soshanguve Let me tell you a story. Not from a dusty theological text, but from the sun-baked streets of Soshanguve. I visited a community kitchen run by a widow, Gogo Mthembu. Her pension was a...

The Investigator's Faith

The Investigator’s Faith: Where Reason and Revelation Meet in the African Soul A Personal Encounter with Truth My friends, let me tell you about the day I became a detective of the divine. It was right here in Akasia, Pretoria, where the red soil stains your shoes and the summer heat shimmers like a mirage over the Mabopane Highway. I was sitting in my study, surrounded by books—theological tomes, scientific journals, and the daily newspaper filled with stories of load-shedding and political turmoil. That particular day, the front page carried a story about our local police station struggling with only five operational vehicles to serve 152 square kilometers . Can you imagine? How does one enforce justice without proper tools This got me thinking about our spiritual tools—how we investigate the greatest claims of truth. Are we properly equipped? I recall my uncle, a lifelong skeptic, challenging me: "How can an educated man like you believe a dead man came back to life?" Inst...
