Honoring God with Self-Care

Honoring God with Self-Care

**Scripture:** 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, "Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies."

**Thought :** In a world that constantly demands our attention and energy, it's easy to forget the importance of self-care. We may feel obligated to constantly be "on," sacrificing our own well-being for the sake of others or the demands of our daily lives. However, the Bible reminds us that our bodies are not our own but are temples of the Holy Spirit. To honor God, we must honor the vessel He has given us. This includes taking care of our physical, mental, and emotional health, which are vital for us to fulfill our purpose and live a life that reflects His love.

**Action Plan:** Choose one simple act of self-care to prioritize today. It could be taking a 15-minute walk in nature, listening to uplifting music, or enjoying a healthy meal. Even small acts of kindness towards yourself can make a difference in your overall well-being.

**Prayer:** Dear Lord, I thank you for the gift of my body and mind. Help me to honor you by taking care of myself. Guide me to prioritize self-care, not as a selfish act, but as a way to better serve you and others. Give me the strength and wisdom to make choices that nourish my spirit, body, and soul. Amen

My story

The worn leather of my Bible felt cool against my palm as I sat on the park bench, the familiar words of 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 echoing in my mind. "Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies." The words resonated deeply, stirring a sense of responsibility and self-awareness.

For years, I had been running on empty, neglecting my own needs in the relentless pursuit of serving others. I believed that self-sacrifice was the ultimate form of love, that my worth was measured by how much I gave and how little I took for myself. I was exhausted, both physically and emotionally, my spirit frayed like an old, worn tapestry.

Then came the day I realized I was not taking care of the very vessel God had entrusted me with. My body, the temple of His Spirit, was suffering, and I was allowing it. The guilt was a heavy burden, a constant reminder of my failure to honor God's gift.

This realization was a turning point. It was time to shift my perspective, to see self-care not as selfish indulgence, but as an act of obedience.

I began with small steps. I started walking in nature, finding solace and peace amidst the trees and the birdsong. I made time for quiet moments of prayer and reflection, allowing God's presence to fill the void within me. I reintroduced healthy habits into my life, nourishing my body with wholesome food and finding joy in movement.

As I started to care for myself, I noticed a change. I felt lighter, stronger, more resilient. The constant fatigue dissipated, replaced by a renewed energy and zest for life. My capacity to love others grew, fueled by a wellspring of self-love.

I realized that loving myself wasn't a form of selfishness, but a necessary act of stewardship. Taking care of myself was not a distraction from God's purpose but a critical step towards fulfilling it.

This journey of self-care, however, is not without its challenges. Sometimes, the whispers of doubt and guilt return, reminding me of the old patterns of sacrifice and self-neglect. But now, I have learned to recognize these whispers for what they are: remnants of a past I am choosing to leave behind.

With each step I take towards self-care, I am reminded of the profound truth of Mark 12:30-31: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than ththese3

Loving myself is not just about making myself happy; it is about honoring God's gift, becoming the best version of myself, and being better equipped to love others as Christ loved me. It is about walking in freedom, not in bondage, and being a more effective instrument in His hands.

My journey of self-care is a continuous process, a lifelong commitment to honoring God by taking care of the body and mind He has given me. It is a journey of grace, a constant reminder that I am loved, valued, and worthy of care. It is a journey that, I believe, will allow me to truly fulfill the purpose God has for my life.

Go deeper

The concept of self-care is not explicitly mentioned in the Bible, but there are principles that can be applied to support the idea of taking care of oneself in order to fulfill one's purpose.

In 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, it says, "Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies." This verse emphasizes the importance of taking care of our bodies, which includes physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

Additionally, in Mark 12:30-31, Jesus says, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these." This verse highlights the importance of loving oneself in order to love others effectively.

Ultimately, investing in self-care to support your purpose can be seen as a way to honor God by taking care of the body and mind that He has given you, so that you can fulfill the purpose He has for your life and love others well.

The Firm Foundation of Faith

## The Firm Foundation of Faith **Scripture:** Hebrews 11:1 "Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see." **Thought:** Life's journey is often marked by uncertainty and challenges. This faith allows us to persevere, knowing that God is working, even when we can't see the immediate results. It empowers us to step forward with courage, knowing we're not alone. Embracing this understanding allows us to live with a peace that surpasses all understanding, a peace rooted in the unshakeable truth of God's love and faithfulness. **Action Plan:** Spend 15 minutes today in quiet meditation on Hebrews 11. Reflect on a specific area in your life where you need to strengthen your faith. **Prayer:** Heavenly Father, I come before You today acknowledging my need for a stronger faith. Help me to truly grasp the meaning of Hebrews 11:1, to trust in Your promises even when I cannot see the outcome. In Jesus’ name, Amen. My story  Th...

**Restoring Relationships**

Last Tuesday, during Eskom’s Stage 6 load-shedding, I sat in my dimly lit Akasia living room, staring at a WhatsApp message from my cousin Thabo. Our once-close bond had fractured over a political debate—ANC vs. EFF—that spiraled into personal jabs. His text read: *“You’ve become a coconut, bra. Black on the outside, white-washed inside.”* My reply? A venomous *“At least I’m not a populist clown.”* Pride, that sly serpent, had coiled around our tongues.   But as the generator hummed and my coffee cooled, Colossians 3:13 flickered in my mind like a candle in the dark: *“Forgive as the Lord forgave you.”* Unconditional. No asterisks. No “but he started it.” Just grace.   **II. The Theology of Broken Pipes**   South Africa knows fractures. Our Vaal River, choked by sewage and neglect, mirrors relational toxicity—grievances left to fester. Yet, Christ’s forgiveness isn’t a passive drip; it’s a flash flood. To “bear with one another” (Colossians 3:13) is to choo...

The Power of the Mundane

## The Power of the Mundane **Scripture:** "And not a sparrow falls to the ground apart from your Father's will. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don't be afraid; you are more valuable than many sparrows." - Matthew 10:29-31 **Thought:** We often focus on the big moments, the grand gestures, believing those are the only things that truly matter to God. But Jesus reminds us that He cares deeply for even the smallest details of our lives. The way we approach our daily tasks, the words we speak, the thoughts we harbor – all of it is important. God sees it all, and He values each detail. This understanding empowers us to see purpose in the mundane, to find meaning in the seemingly insignificant. **Action Plan:** Today, choose one small task that you typically rush through or do without much thought. As you do it, consciously pause and offer it as a prayer to God. Thank Him for the opportunity to serve Him, even in this seemingly insignificant act.  **...
