The Strength of Shared Purpose

The Strength of Shared Purpose

**Scripture: **Ecclesiastes 4:9-12:** "Two are better than one... For if either of them falls, the one will lift up his companion."

**Thought:** The Bible repeatedly emphasizes the importance of community and connection in the Christian journey. We are not meant to walk alone. In Ecclesiastes, we see the practical benefits of companionship, especially in times of difficulty. We are stronger together, able to encourage, support, and lift each other up. The early church, as depicted in Acts, exemplifies this principle. They shared resources, worshipped together, and actively built each other up.

**Action Plan:** Take a moment to reflect on your current community connections. Are you actively seeking opportunities to connect with others who share your faith and purpose? Consider joining a small group, volunteering at your church, or simply reaching out to a fellow believer for encouragement and support.

**Prayer:** Lord, help me to see the importance of community and fellowship. Guide me to connect with others who share my faith and purpose. Give me the courage to reach out and build meaningful relationships with those around me. Empower me to serve others and build up the body of Christ. Amen.

My story

Growing up, I felt like a lone sailboat tossed about in a turbulent sea. Uncertain of my direction, I drifted from one interest to another, yearning for something deeper, something that resonated with the soul. It wasn't until I stumbled upon a small, forgotten church tucked away in a quiet corner of town that I finally felt a sense of belonging.

The warmth of the congregation, the sincerity in their prayers, and the genuine love radiating from their smiles filled me with a peace I had never known. It was there, amidst the hymns and the shared stories, that I began to understand the power of community.

As I delved into scripture, I found myself drawn to the stories of the early disciples, their unwavering faith in the face of adversity, and their commitment to supporting each other. The passage in Acts, detailing their shared life and their unwavering dedication to spreading the Gospel, resonated deeply with me. I realized that I wasn't meant to navigate life alone.

Finding a community of like-minded individuals, people who shared my faith and my desire to grow closer to God, became a lifeline. We supported each other through life's challenges, celebrated triumphs together, and prayed for one another, our voices weaving together a tapestry of love and resilience.

Through this journey, I began to understand the true meaning of purpose. It wasn't about finding a singular, grand calling, but about embracing the smaller moments – a kind word offered to a stranger, a listening ear for a friend in need, a life lived in service to others.

Today, as I look back, I see how God has used the challenges and triumphs of my journey to shape me. My path, once uncertain, now shines with the light of His grace, guiding me toward a deeper understanding of myself and my place in the world.

And as I continue to walk this path, I do so with a heart overflowing with gratitude for the community that surrounds me, for the strength found in shared purpose, and for the eternal love that binds us together in the name of Christ.

Go deeper

In the Bible, we see the importance of connecting with others who share our purpose in various passages. One such example is found in Ecclesiastes 4:9-12, which states:

"Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up. Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken."

This passage emphasizes the value of companionship and working together towards a common goal. It highlights the idea that having like-minded individuals by our side can provide support, encouragement, and strength in times of need.

Furthermore, in the New Testament, we see the concept of community and fellowship among believers in passages such as Acts 2:42-47:

"They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved."

This passage illustrates the early Christian community's commitment to each other, sharing resources, supporting one another, and worshiping together. It shows the power of unity and fellowship in fulfilling the purpose of spreading the Gospel and building up the body of believers.

In conclusion, connecting with others who share our purpose is not only beneficial but also essential in the Christian walk. Through mutual support, encouragement, and fellowship, we can strengthen our faith, grow in our purpose, and impact the world around us for the glory of God.

**Cultivating Patience**

 ## The Divine Delay: When God Hits Pause on Your Breakthrough (From My Akasia Veranda) Brothers, sisters, let me tell you, this Highveld sun beating down on my veranda in Akasia isn’t just baking the pavement. It’s baking my *impatience*. You know the feeling? You’ve prayed, you’ve declared, you’ve stomped the devil’s head (in the spirit, naturally!), yet that breakthrough? It feels like waiting for a Gautrain on a public holiday schedule – promised, but mysteriously absent. Psalm 27:14 shouts: *"Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage!"* But waiting? In *this* economy? With Eskom plunging us into darkness and the price of a loaf of bread climbing faster than Table Mountain? It feels less like divine strategy and more like celestial sabotage. I get it. Just last week, stuck in the eternal queue at the Spar parking lot (seems half of Tshwane had the same pap-and-chops craving), watching my dashboard clock tick towards yet another loadshedding slot, my ow...

**Beware the Bloodless Gospel**

 ## The Forge of Faith: Escaping the Bloodless Gospel’s Embrace **Akasia, Pretoria — July 2025**   The winter air bites sharp as a *mamba*’s tooth here in Akasia. I sip rooibos tea on my porch, watching the *veld* shimmer gold under a brittle sun. On my phone, headlines scream: *“59 White South Africans Granted US Refugee Status!”* . Elsewhere, a viral clip shows a prophet in sequinned robes demanding a congregant’s salary “for angelic investment.” My chest tightens. *This*, friends, is the fruit of a **bloodless gospel**—a faith anaemic, diluted, divorced from the Cross’s terrible furnace. It whispers, *“Just believe,”* ignoring Christ’s roar: *“If anyone would come after Me, let him deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow Me!”* (Luke 9:23).   ### I. **Your Pain Prepares Your Platform**

 ## From Ashes to Anointing: How God Forges Platforms in the Fires of Our Pain The relentless Highveld sun beat down on the N1 highway as I white-knuckled the steering wheel, crawling past the Hammanskraal junction. Brake lights shimmered like a demonic necklace ahead—another crash? Load-shedding-induced traffic chaos? Or just the eternal Tshwane roadworks? My knuckles tightened. I’d left Akasia at dawn for a crucial ministry meeting in Midrand, yet here I sat, imprisoned in steel and frustration. An SMS buzzed: *"Stage 6 until midnight. Venue has no generator. Reschedule?"* My spirit sank. The platform I’d prepared for collapsed before I’d even spoken a word. In that sweltering metal coffin, 2 Corinthians 4:17 thundered in my spirit: *"For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all"* . Light? Momentary? This felt like lead and eternity. Yet God whispered: *"This gridlock is your anvil, Harold. Your pain i...
