Last week, as Eskom plunged half of Pretoria into yet another bout of load-shedding, I sat in my dimly lit Akasia living room, laptop battery dwindling, and wondered: *How do we keep believing when everything around us flickers like a failing power grid?*
Doubt, like rolling blackouts, has a way of disrupting life. One moment, you’re full of faith—the next, darkness. And yet, Scripture tells us, *"The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it"* (John 1:5). But how? In a country where corruption scandals make daily headlines, where politicians promise "new dawns" while the lights literally go out, where unemployment grips a generation—how do we hold onto unshakable faith?
### **The Anatomy of Doubt: A South African Epidemic**
Doubt isn’t just a personal struggle; it’s a national condition. We doubt our leaders (rightfully so). We doubt the economy. We doubt whether this democracy will ever deliver on its promises. And if we’re honest, sometimes we doubt God. *"If He’s in control, why does it feel like chaos reigns?"*
But here’s the thing: doubt isn’t the opposite of faith—it’s the wrestling partner of faith. Even the great biblical heroes doubted. Moses said, *"Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh?"* (Exodus 3:11). Gideon asked, *"If the Lord is with us, why has all this happened?"* (Judges 6:13). And Thomas, bless his skeptical heart, needed to touch Jesus’ scars before believing (John 20:27).
God doesn’t rebuke honest doubt—He rebukes *unbelief*. There’s a difference. Doubt asks, *"God, are You there?"* Unbelief says, *"God isn’t there."*
### **The Antidote: Truth That Outlasts Load-Shedding**
So how do we break free? Paul gives us the blueprint: *"Take every thought captive to obey Christ"* (2 Corinthians 10:5). In other words, don’t let doubt run wild in your mind like a taxi driver ignoring traffic rules (we all know those exist only in theory). Arrest those thoughts. Interrogate them with Scripture.
When I’m overwhelmed by South Africa’s chaos—whether it’s another news headline about state capture or the rising cost of maize meal—I do two things:
1. **Declare God’s Word out loud.** Like Philippians 4:13: *"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."*
2. **Replace fear with facts of faith.** God’s track record is flawless. Mine? Not so much.
### **A Practical Faith in an Unpredictable World**
Faith isn’t just for church; it’s for the streets of Tshwane. It’s for:
- The student writing exams while worrying about fees.
- The mother hustling to feed her kids in a township where jobs are scarce.
- The businessman trying to stay ethical in a system that rewards corruption.
Faith says, *"Even if Eskom fails, my God won’t."* Even if the rand crashes, *"my treasure is in heaven"* (Matthew 6:20). Even if politicians disappoint, *"God is still on the throne"* (Psalm 47:8).
### **Final Thought: The Unbreakable Chain**
Doubt whispers, *"You can’t."* God thunders, *"You can—through Me."* The choice is ours: Will we let doubt paralyze us, or will we let truth propel us?
So tonight, when the lights go out again, I won’t just light a candle—I’ll declare: *"Jesus is the Light of the World"* (John 8:12). And in His light, even the darkest doubts must flee.
**Break the chains. Speak the truth. Walk in faith.**
